Growing up with a single mother between Northern California and Queensland, Australia, Josie has had varied experiences in rural and international settings. Her background living in communities with varying socioeconomic landscapes informed her view of some of the most pressing social and environmental problems of today. Upon moving to Southern California, Josie fell in love with the diversity and booming activity of Los Angeles. As the daughter of a Haitian immigrant, she resonates strongly with many of the diasporic communities and histories within LA.
Josie’s passion for communications began in college, while obtaining her degree in Environmental and Political Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz. At UCSC she wrote for a student environmental magazine which confirmed her interest in publishing. She went on to become Editorial Assistant for an Africa-based travel blog while studying abroad in Senegal. Josie plans to put her background in Environmental Studies to use while coordinating SLATE-Z’s Transit Work Group and serving as Communications Associate.
In her free time, Josie can be found attending community events and concerts in LA and backpacking across the African continent.
